How to Safely Practice Ayurveda

CAAM is working towards protecting the practitioners through developing Insurance coverage that is specifically tailored towards the practice of Ayurveda. Until then, you should consider taking the following precautions when practicing Ayurveda. We will post all insurance information once it becomes available.

Currently insurance coverage for Ayurveda is not available. As a result practitioners have had to resort to arranging coverage through their own insurance agent. In most cases the coverage is expensive, not adequate, and does not fit the needs of an Ayurvedic practitioner.

At the moment each practitioner is working on their own and doing their best in providing support and Ayurvedic consultation and treatments to their clients.

  1. Before opening an office research the ordinances in the city you wish to practice.
  2. Have your patients sign a waiver form that states you do NOT diagnose only Medical Doctors diagnose. Download the disclosure forms for California practitioners prepared by the organizers of SB577 after it became law from: www.CaliforniaHealthFreedom.com
  3. Explain in detail the procedures to your client so they understand the scope and limitations of the treatments.
  4. Have a referral list of doctors, Chiropractors and other practitioners in your area. This is a good practice, as these doctors will eventually refer patients back to you.
  5. For invasive procedures it is wise to have a registered nurse present for the treatment. (this is a good practice for Basti)

As Ayurvedic practitioners we have developed many skills. Many of us come from business world, marketing, health care and healing, therefore we bring different abilities into our practice. You need to remember to use all your knowledge to build your practice. Keep in mind, this is a business and you need to be aware of the business aspect of your practice to be successful. Consult the experts in accounting, insurance, business law, real estate, etc. if necessary.

We in the community of Ayurveda must all work together with a united front to advance the cause of Ayurveda to be more readily accepted in the modern health care system.
